Root rots — garden strawberry

Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier

A complex of diseases of the garden strawberry caused by soil-borne fungi and oomycetes, such as Phytophthora fragariae, Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae.

Root rot pathogens infect the root system and the crown of the strawberry. Red stele root rot is caused by Phytophthora fragariae var. fragariae, Rhizoctonia rot by a complex of pathogens headed by Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium wilt by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae. Infections caused by species of the genera Pythium, Fusarium solani, Armillaria mellea, and Pestalotiopsis clavispora are also encountered.

Diagnostic signs include reddening of the root stele in Phytophthora rot, necrosis of lateral roots resulting in a "rat-tail" effect, and the appearance of black girdling lesions in Rhizoctonia rot. Externally, the infection manifests as stunted growth, wilting during flowering and fruiting phases, and discoloration of the leaves.

In strawberry breeding for resistance, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling complex resistance are used instead of monogenic resistance. Molecular DNA markers (SSR, SCAR, SNP) are employed to evaluate breeding material, while variety resistance in catalogs is denoted as a qualitative trait without specifying genetic formulas.
