Moniliosis (Brown Rot) — Japanese Plum

Prunus salicina Lindl.

A fungal disease of the Japanese plum caused by pathogens of the genus Monilinia, which manifests as blossom blight in spring and fruit rot during the harvest ripening period.

In the reference 12 varieties crop Japanese plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

The disease is caused by the fungi Monilinia fructicola, Monilinia laxa, and Monilinia fructigena. The first species primarily causes brown rot, the second is associated with blossom and shoot blight, and the third is more commonly manifested in the form of fruit infection.

The clinical picture on Prunus salicina includes spring wilting and desiccation of flowers and fruit twigs, creating a "scorched" shoot effect. With fruit rot, brown spots form on ripening fruit, which spread rapidly and become covered with grayish spore pads, leading to fruit drop or mummification.

In Japanese plum breeding, there is no data on specific resistance genes; therefore, work is carried out using gene pool screening. The resistance of cultivars and hybrids is determined by scoring the degree of their infection under field or laboratory conditions for the subsequent selection of the most viable forms.
