Rust of rye

Secale cereale L.

Fungal diseases of rye, represented primarily by brown leaf rust and stem (black) rust, caused by specialized species of obligate parasites from the genus Puccinia.

In the reference 116 varieties crop Rye, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of brown leaf rust is Puccinia dispersa (synonym P. recondita f. sp. secalis), whose intermediate hosts belong to the Boraginaceae family. The disease manifests as small rusty-brown pustules on leaves and leaf sheaths, often surrounded by a light halo, and concludes with the formation of black telia.

Stem or black rust is caused by the fungus Puccinia graminis f. sp. secalis, which uses barberry as an intermediate host. It is characterized by the development of oblong pustules on stems, sheaths, and spikes that rupture the plant epidermis, followed by a transition to the black telia stage.

The pathogens are characterized by high physiological variability: many races have been described for brown rust, and more than 20 pathotypes have been identified for stem rust. Breeding for resistance relies on the use of donors such as Khemochulpan, Kuspan, and Derzhavinskaya, in which resistance to stem rust is controlled by dominant alleles of Sr genes.
