Botrytis blight of Hydrangea macrophylla
Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser.
A fungal disease of Hydrangea macrophylla caused by the polyphagous fungus Botrytis cinerea. It manifests as a grey fuzzy mold, necrosis, and decay of leaves, flower buds, and stems.

The causative agent of Botrytis blight in Hydrangea macrophylla is the fungus Botrytis cinerea. Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the formation of a fuzzy grey mold on leaves, flower stalks, and buds. Affected tissues become soft, water-soaked, and undergo rapid decay, which often leads to premature browning and shedding of inflorescences.
When hydrangea stems are infected, moist greyish-black spots form, which can progress into necrotic lesions. Under low humidity conditions, damaged areas may dry out and disintegrate, leaving perforations in the plant tissue. The plant as a whole weakens, resulting in overall stunted development. Specific resistance genes to this pathogen have not yet been identified in this hydrangea species.
