The vigor of bullace, damson, mirabelle, and bullace plum is determined by the trunk cross-sectional area, linear crown parameters, and annual shoot growth length.

To assess the vigor of Prunus domestica subsp. insititia, standard agronomic methods are used, including calculating the trunk cross-sectional area at a fixed distance above the graft union after the growing season. Additionally, tree height, crown diameter, and annual shoot growth indicators are taken into account, based on which cultivars are classified on a scale from low-vigor to high-vigor.
The vigor trait significantly depends on the scion-rootstock combination, where the use of dwarfing rootstocks considerably restricts tree development. Moderate vigor, characteristic of many damson and bullace forms, allows them to be used in intensive orchards with high-density planting schemes, for establishing hedgerows and windbreaks, as well as for reducing the volume of annual rejuvenating pruning.
