Rootstocks for bullace, damson, and mirabelle

Prunus domestica L. subsp. insititia (L.) C. K. Schneid.

The use of rootstocks for Prunus domestica subsp. insititia follows the same principles and varieties as those for the domestic plum. Selection of a rootstock is determined by vigor requirements, adaptability to soil conditions, and planting density.

In the reference 14 varieties crop Damson, where this is mentioned in the description.

The subspecies name insititia derives from the Latin word meaning "grafted," which historically indicates the role of these forms as rootstocks. In several regions, including Central Hungary, bullace forms have been traditionally used as rootstocks due to their high adaptation to wet soils and ability to develop a deep root system that ensures tree longevity.

In modern practice, standard clonal and seedling rootstocks used for European plums are applied to mirabelle, damson, and bullace. These include St. Julien A, which provides moderate vigor and good compatibility; the vigorous Brompton; as well as modern hybrid forms such as VVA-1 and Wavit, designed for intensive cultivation technologies and growth control under various soil conditions.
