Variety traits
Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D. A. Webb
A key almond breeding parameter that determines planting density and canopy management strategy. It is assessed via trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) and scoring scales in comparison to reference cultivars.
In the reference 82 varieties crop Almond, where this is mentioned in the description.
An objective assessment of almond vigor is based on biometric measurements of the trunk cross-sectional area, as well as tree height and canopy dimensions. In field breeding, scoring scales from 1 to 9 are used to classify genotypes, with the Nonpareil cultivar often serving as the benchmark for medium vigor.
The classification of cultivars into low, medium, and high vigor directly influences planting density. Using vigorous forms requires larger spacing, whereas low-vigor types are preferred for intensive orchards with planting densities exceeding 1000 trees per hectare.
The balance between vegetative vigor and reproductive processes is critical for almond productivity. Excessive vegetative activity can reduce yields, while the use of size-controlling rootstocks allows for accelerating the onset of bearing by 1–1.5 years and facilitates the mechanization of harvesting.
