Vigor — Soft wheat

An indicator of the ability of wheat seeds to produce vigorous seedlings under field conditions, overcoming soil resistance. It characterizes the quality of seed material and its ability to maintain a developmental advantage throughout the growing season.

The vigor of soft wheat is determined by a laboratory method of germinating seeds in containers with sand moistened to 60% of its water-holding capacity. During the analysis, seeds are sown under a 3 cm layer of dry coarse sand and kept for 10 days at a temperature of 16–18 °C. The main evaluation criteria are the percentage of healthy seedlings that have emerged and their mass calculated per 100 seeds.

For regionalized wheat varieties, vigor indices typically range from 85–96%. Values below 85% indicate the presence of latent defects or weakened seed material. High seed vigor ensures uniform and even emergence, the ability of seedlings to penetrate the soil crust, and a supply of nutrients, which positively correlates with the final grain yield.
