The vriesea inflorescence can be a simple spike, resembling a "sword" or "feather," or a branched complex panicle. The shape ranges from flat sword-like to "square," and the bract coloration is presented in a wide spectrum of colors, from red and orange to yellow, pink, purple, and bicolored.

During variety trials, the length and width of the inflorescence, the number of flowers, and the type of scape arrangement are recorded. The duration of ornamental quality is determined by the density and brightness of the bracts; once the inflorescence dies, the parent rosette of the plant gradually declines.
