Male Sterility (CMS) — Hydrangea macrophylla

Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser.

In Hydrangea macrophylla, male sterility manifests as pollen degradation resulting from selection for double flowers and ornamental inflorescence traits. This condition is not a commercial metric and represents a side effect of mutations in reproductive organ development.

Male sterility in Hydrangea macrophylla is closely linked to the inflorescence structure of ornamental cultivars. In forms with double flowers, abortion or degradation of pollen is frequently observed, which is considered a consequence of genetic disorders similar to mutations in floral organ development genes.

In breeding programs, male sterility is evaluated experimentally through analysis of pollen grain morphology using scanning electron microscopy, testing of pollen viability, and assessment of seed set during backcrossing. This trait does not have standardized agronomic scales and is not utilized in industrial hybridization.
