Grape Bloom

Grape bloom (pruin) is a protective layer of epicuticular wax on the surface of berries, leaves, and shoots, which is an important varietal characteristic and a determinant of fruit shelf life.

Bloom performs protective functions by preventing excessive moisture loss and maintaining berry turgor. It serves as a barrier against the penetration of pathogens, including the causative agents of powdery mildew, and protects tissues from sunburn and photooxidation. The integrity of the bloom directly affects the transportability of grapes, as any damage to it accelerates the development of rot.

The hydrophobic properties of the wax layer must be taken into account when performing agrotechnical operations, as they prevent the uniform distribution of liquids on the plant surface, requiring the addition of surfactants during spraying.
