The variety is characterized by early bud break and very late ripening. In unfavorable years, due to late ripening, the berries accumulate little sugar, and the resulting wines are noted for high acidity. The variety is at risk of damage from spring frosts.
The plant forms large, shouldered clusters with medium-sized round berries covered with a waxy bloom. In cultivation, the grape is often grown on trellises or pergolas. The variety has many historical synonyms, reflecting its wide distribution in Europe.
