The name Kölner Blauer is not a unique identifier. It most often refers to the Slovenian variety Žametovka, characterized by early bud burst, late ripening, and susceptibility to spring frosts, or the Italian variety Schiava Grossa, distinguished by its high adaptability.

In old ampelographic descriptions, vines under this name are characterized by medium-sized, dark green, thick, and shiny leaves, as well as large, round, dark blue berries. The varieties have a dual-purpose use, being applied for both winemaking and as table grapes.

Since this is a collective name for folk varieties, precise characteristics depend on the specific genetic material. Modern identification of vines under this name requires clarification, as it historically combines various regional grape types.
