Winter protection for lettuce

Lactuca sativa L.

Technology for protecting winter lettuce crops with non-woven materials to maintain the established rosette in a dormant state until spring growth resumption.

In the reference 141 varieties crop Lettuce, where this is mentioned in the description.

For winter lettuce sowing in open ground, air- and light-permeable non-woven materials are used, which are installed when temperatures drop to -5°C. When frosts below -10°C are forecasted, an additional layer of coniferous branches or dry leaves is used for thermal insulation of the root system. During winter thaws, the cover must be partially opened for ventilation to avoid rosette rot and prevent damping off.

The effectiveness of the method depends on the choice of winter-hardy varieties, such as 'Moskovskiy parnikoviy', 'Gladiator', or Romaine-type varieties, as well as on adhering to September sowing dates, which ensure rooting without excessive overgrowth. An important condition for successful overwintering is placing crops on well-drained elevated areas, as stagnant moisture under the cover leads to inevitable crop loss.
