Hydrangea winter hardiness

The ability of hydrangea to withstand a complex of adverse winter factors. It is characterized by a temperature threshold, USDA hardiness zones, or a scoring system for the degree of damage to annual shoots.

To evaluate the winter hardiness of hydrangeas, the 7-point scale of the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GBS RAS) is used, which accounts for the degree of freezing of annual shoots, where 1 point corresponds to no damage, and 3 points correspond to damage from 50 to 100% of the shoot length. A universal plant condition scale from 1 to 5 points is also used.

High winter hardiness is demonstrated by the species Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea arborescens, which are capable of overwintering in northern regions. Low winter hardiness is characteristic of species such as Hydrangea macrophylla, where the freezing of flower buds on previous year's shoots leads to a lack of flowering.
