A complex adaptive trait of raspberry to climatic conditions, determining the ability of canes to withstand frost and temperature fluctuations to ensure consistent fruit production.

The winter hardiness of raspberry is assessed by the plants' ability to endure early winter frosts, extremely low mid-winter temperatures, thaws, and spring recurrent frosts. Field evaluation is carried out during the onset of flowering on a 5-point scale, where the minimum score indicates no tissue damage.
Varieties with high winter hardiness withstand winter temperatures down to -40°С with a damage score of 1.0–1.5, whereas low winter hardiness manifests as freezing of canes during moderate frosts with scores above 2.5. For summer-bearing varieties, this indicator is critical for yield formation, while for primocane (everbearing) varieties, overwintering of the aerial part is eliminated by mowing.
