The variety is a traditional form of sweet chestnut, selected and preserved in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain over centuries of cultivation. The fruits of the variety are characterized by their large size; on average, three nuts typically mature within each prickly burr.

The plant belongs to late-maturing varieties; the harvest period falls between late October and November. The fruits are intended for human consumption, and the variety is also of interest to researchers as part of the genetic pool of traditional Spanish chestnuts.
