The Canalina variety, also known as Castagna della Madonna, is a local variety traditionally grown in the Roero area of Piedmont. The variety received its name from the town of Canale, a historical center for the trade of these fruits.

The fruits are of a very early maturity group and ripen in the first ten days of September, making them among the first of the season. The variety is intended for the production of edible chestnuts and is used primarily for fresh consumption.
