The variety originates from the Nebrodi region in Sicily. The nuts are characterized by a persistent aroma and flavor, which makes them in demand for local artisanal baking. Currently, the variety is considered an object of biodiversity conservation.

Scientific work with the variety focuses on methods for obtaining virus-free planting material, including micropropagation technologies and the creation of synthetic seeds. In the mountainous regions of Sicily, plantings of this hazelnut are traditionally used to prevent soil erosion and hydrogeological instability.
