Maiko is a deciduous shrub with green leaves, reaching a height and width of about 90–100 cm. The plant forms spherical inflorescences, the color of which varies from blue to purple depending on the soil acidity level.

The variety prefers partial shade and requires regular watering and well-drained, rich soils. The plant is characterized by winter hardiness within USDA zones 6a–10b, possesses decorative autumn foliage color, and is used as a parent plant in breeding.
