The shrub has a rounded or obovate shape. Dark green foliage acquires reddish, purple, or copper-orange shades upon emerging and in autumn; leaf margins are serrated.

Flat corymbose inflorescences consist of central fertile and marginal sterile flowers. Their coloration varies from blue or lilac-blue on acidic soils to pink on alkaline ones. Flowering continues from July to October.

The plant prefers partial shade and moist, fertile, drained soils. It is used in ornamental gardening for bordering, hedges, and creating accent groups.
