Variety description

10 August 2026

East Malling IX = M9 is a rootstock for grafting cultivated apple varieties. Its genetic basis traces back to the French group of genotypes "Jaune de Metz", historically known as "Paradise Apple".

The rootstock promotes earlier fruit ripening and increases their size. Trees on this rootstock reach 30–50% of the size of trees on seed rootstocks.

The root system of the rootstock is brittle, which leads to low resistance to lodging and the need for permanent support. East Malling IX = M9 has resistance to collar rot, but is very susceptible to fire blight, and is moderately resistant or susceptible to powdery mildew and woolly apple aphid.
