The Malling 27 rootstock provides trees with a size of 30–50% of standard seedling rootstocks. Plants grafted onto it are characterized by high precocity, beginning to fruit in the 2–3 year, however, the rootstock itself is not intended for fruit production and may contribute to some reduction in their size in the scion.
Due to a poorly developed root system, the rootstock has extremely low resistance to lodging and requires mandatory permanent support throughout its entire life. Plants are highly sensitive to fire blight, poorly tolerate competition with weeds, and require regular irrigation and high-quality care.
The main scope of application includes amateur gardening, container growing, and the creation of high-density plantings. Malling 27 is also used in breeding programs or as an intermediate interstock to suppress scion growth.
