M13 is part of the "Malling" rootstock series and was used to standardize the range of rootstocks previously known under the collective name "Paradise". The rootstock is intended for grafting apple varieties in order to accelerate the onset of fruiting and control the growth of the scion.

In breeding work, M13 was used as a parental component for the development of new rootstocks, such as the super-dwarfing rootstock M27. Regarding morphological characteristics, the rootstock is classified as vigorous.

Information on the resistance of M13 to diseases is limited, however, its likely tolerance to replant disease is assumed.
