The tree reaches about 6 meters in height; over time, the crown spreads in width by approximately half of the height. The leaves are heart-shaped with 6–7 pairs of shallow lobes; new growth may have a purple tint.
The oval or plum-shaped fruits reach a size of about 4.5 cm and are colored a deep red or brownish-red. The tree blooms abundantly with white flowers in spring, is a honey plant, is wind-resistant, and tolerates salty air.
