The Gargnan variety (synonym Grignan) is a tree with medium to low vigor and an upright crown. Vegetative development is slow. The variety is self-incompatible and requires the presence of other varieties for pollination, such as Leccino, Pendolino, Trepp, Casaliva, or Favarol. The tree does not tolerate severe or late pruning well, as this provokes the growth of vegetative shoots.

The variety is early, with fruit ripening occurring synchronously. Small to medium elliptical fruits weighing 2–3 g have a black-purple color at maturity. The plant has good resistance to cold, as well as to peacock spot (Spilocaea oleaginea) and olive knot (Pseudomonas savastanoi), but is sensitive to the olive fruit fly. Fructification is characterized as medium but constant.
