Studies of morphological traits and molecular genetic testing allow the OBLONGA variety to be considered a synonym or American variation of the Frantoio variety. The tree is evergreen, reaching a height of 7.5 to 15 meters at maturity with a canopy width of 4.5 to 9 meters. The foliage has a silvery-green shade.

The variety is intended for high-quality oil production. The plant demonstrates a high degree of resistance to the fungal root disease, verticillium wilt. Optimal growing conditions correspond to USDA zones 9a–10b; the crop prefers a sunny location and well-drained soils.
