Santagatese is an autochthonous Sicilian variety distributed mainly in the coastal areas of Messina. It is a traditional cultivar, which is among the eight main varieties that form the olive landscape of Sicily.

The fruits of this variety are distinguished by their large size and acquire a purple hue as they ripen. The oil obtained from them has a pronounced fruity aroma, as well as a balanced taste with characteristic notes of grass and almonds. The plant is characterized as hardy.
