The variety is native to the Campania region in Italy and is considered one of the traditional varieties of Sannio, with a cultivation history dating back to the end of the 16th century. It belongs to the category of minor varieties that are of value for the conservation of genetic diversity.
The primary purpose of the variety is olive oil production, and work is underway to study the possibility of obtaining a monovarietal product from it. In documents, the variety is sometimes mentioned as a synonym or alongside the local varieties Ariella and Oliviello.
