The classic Western European variety Morello has been known since the 17th century. The tree is low- or medium-vigor, 3–5 meters in height, often shrub-like in form. It matures in late July – August. The variety is self-fertile, hardy, and resistant to a number of diseases, including bacterial canker. Fruits are large, up to 5–6 g, almost black at full maturity, with juicy and very acidic flesh.
The Russian variety «Морель Брянская» is a low-vigor tree up to 2 meters in height. The maturity group is mid-late, middle of July. The variety is self-fertile, distinguished by high winter hardiness and immunity to Coccomyces hiemalis and Monilinia. Fruits weighing about 4 g have a dark maroon, almost black color and a sweet-and-sour taste; yield is 8–12 kg per tree.
