The Graue Dechantsbirne variety is known as a historical pear cultivar mentioned in pomological literature before the end of the 19th century. A characteristic feature of the variety is the grey color of the skin, caused by the presence of russeting.

Currently, the variety is practically not used in commercial horticulture due to the emergence of more productive hybrids. It is preserved mainly in collection orchards and databases intended for maintaining the biodiversity of fruit crops.
