The variety was found as a chance seedling in the suburbs of Pont-de-Cé (France) and was likely derived from seeds of the Beurré Napoleon pear variety. The tree is medium-sized with an open spreading crown. When grafted onto quince, it often shows incompatibility, which requires the use of an interstock.
The fruits are large, bell-shaped, sometimes slightly knobby, with thin yellow-green glossy skin covered in brown dots. The flesh is white, melting, buttery, sweet, with a slight acidity and delicate aroma, with practically no stone cells. The variety is used as a dessert pear and also as a parental form in breeding work.
