The variety is a compact, densely branched shrub reaching a height of 120–150 cm. It is a hybrid of Rhododendron minus × Rhododendron dauricum. The elliptical leaves are dark green in summer and acquire a characteristic dark reddish-brown or plum-purple shade in winter.
Funnel-shaped flowers of a deep purple-violet-red color are gathered in inflorescences of 4–12 pieces and bloom in early spring. The variety possesses high winter hardiness, corresponding to USDA zone 4, as well as increased resistance to diseases, pests, heat, and drought. The plant is characterized by a low seed-setting capacity.
