Black Down
ActiveRibes nigrum L. · Blackcurrant
University of Bristol L Asthom (GB)
10 August 2026
The variety is the result of interspecific hybridization of Ribes uva-crispa, Ribes divaricatum and Ribes nigrum. The plant is characterized by vigorous growth and the absence of thorns on the shoots; the leaf shape is similar to that of blackcurrant.
The berries have a dark color and exceed the size of blackcurrant fruits; their taste combines the characteristics of the parent species. The variety is late-flowering and resistant to diseases, but may show sensitivity to harsh winters and strong winds.
The plant can be partially self-sterile; for higher yields, planting together with other hybrid varieties is recommended. The fruits are suitable for fresh consumption as well as for all types of industrial processing.
