The variety is autochthonous to the Arribes region in the Spanish provinces of Zamora and Salamanca. It is often identified as Merenzao, although there are difficulties in the literature regarding its exact classification due to the possible presence of different genetic forms under the name Bastardo or Trousseau Noir.
It is a wine grape variety used for the production of red wines, often in blends with local varieties Juan García or Rufete. Wines made from it are characterized by a spicy profile, specific acidity, freshness, and delicacy.
The variety is distinguished by its heat resistance and ability to adapt to changing climatic conditions, requiring a sufficient amount of sunlight.
