The variety has medium or below-average vigor. The leaf is round, five-lobed, medium- or deeply dissected, with bristly pubescence on the underside. Bunches are small, dense, and cylindrical-conical in shape. Berries are small, round, dark blue with a thick waxy bloom.
The plant is fastidious, possesses low frost hardiness and low resistance to fungal diseases, especially to mold and gray rot under excess moisture conditions. Yield is characterized as low and inconsistent.
The grapes are used for the production of red wines and have traditionally been used in blends for port and Madeira. The juice is distinguished by a high sugar content (25–28 g/100 cm³) with moderate acidity. The wines have a deep cherry-red color, moderate tannins, and an aroma of wild berries and cherries.
