Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is ancient, of natural origin, having emerged in the regions of France. The vines are characterized by vigorous growth. The leaves are rounded, three- or five-lobed, and deeply dissected. The bunches are of medium size, conical in shape, and dense in structure. The berries are small, round or slightly oval, dark blue in color, and covered with a thick waxy bloom. The skin is thin, and the flesh is juicy.

Béquignol belongs to mid-late varieties. It possesses high yield and resistance to drought, is relatively resistant to downy mildew and gray mold, but is sensitive to powdery mildew. Rare color mutations of the variety exist. For scientific purposes, it is used as a model for studying berry mosaicism.

The variety is used as a wine grape. The red wines obtained from it have a light body, low tannin and alcohol content, and are intended for early consumption. In Argentina, the variety is used in blends to adjust the color of wines.
