The variety is autochthonous to Spain and is currently considered a valuable genetic resource for winemaking. It is practically not cultivated on a mass scale, representing residual populations, and is used by researchers to study the adaptation of viticulture to climate change.

The wine variety demonstrates an ability to maintain wine characteristics under heat stress conditions, surpassing Tempranillo in a number of indicators. Scientific institutions are engaged in its preservation and ampelographic evaluation as rare genetic material.
