The variety is autochthonous to the Jura region. It belongs to the endangered category and is currently grown on extremely small areas by winemaking enthusiasts for the conservation of genetic resources.

Béclan belongs to wine grape varieties of early maturity. The variety is characterized by low productivity and sensitivity to downy mildew, while showing lower susceptibility to powdery mildew and gray mold. The vine has poor tolerance to spring frosts.

The grapes are used to produce red wines of a light shade with a low alcohol level, which are often used in blends due to their liveliness and lightness. It has many synonyms, including Petit Béclan, Bacclan, Dureau, Roussette Noir, and Süßschwarz.
