The variety was bred at the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture in Veitshöchheim. The parent forms of Cantaro are the Riesling variety and an unknown variety. The grapes are intended for wine production.

The variety possesses an aromatic profile with floral, spicy, and peach notes. During trials, Cantaro demonstrated satisfactory production efficiency and characteristics similar to Riesling.
