The variety is of Spanish origin, having emerged in the vicinity of the city of Cariñena, after which it spread widely throughout the Mediterranean countries. It belongs to late-ripening varieties; buds break late, which protects them from spring frosts. The variety prefers a hot, dry climate, sandy soils, and is resistant to strong winds.

The plant is characterized by high yields, which require control of vine load to maintain berry quality. The variety is susceptible to downy mildew, powdery mildew, grey rot, and infestation by vine moths. A mutation of the variety with white skin exists.

The wine variety is primarily used in blends. Wines made from it are characterized by high levels of tannins, pronounced acidity, and aromas of red fruits, berries, licorice, spices, and smoked meat. When using harvest from old vines, the variety is capable of producing complex, high-quality wines.
