The variety is late-ripening and is distinguished by vigorous vine growth. Morphologically, it is characterized by dense pubescence of young shoots, shiny leaves that turn crimson or red in autumn, and small dark, almost black berries. In viticulture, due to low bud fertility at the base, long pruning is recommended.

The variety is sensitive to weather conditions during flowering, which can lead to berry shatter. Wines from Carmenère possess soft tannins and aromas of black berries, coffee, and chocolate, as well as characteristic "green" notes, expressed in the scent of bell pepper or tomato leaf if the crop does not ripen sufficiently.
