The variety belongs to the late-ripening group and possesses a thick berry skin, which allows it to adapt to the conditions of northern Spain. Genetically, it is characterized by high heterozygosity. The variety is cultivated in the Asturias region and is frequently used in blends with Mencía, Verdejo Negro, and Bastardo varieties to provide structure, color, and acidity to wines.

The purpose of the variety is exclusively for winemaking. Single-varietal wines made from it possess an intense aromatic profile with notes of ripe red fruits, spices, and mineral undertones, characterized by pronounced tannins and good acidity.
