The variety is a spontaneous color mutation discovered in the early 20th century. Historically, it is distributed in the Languedoc-Roussillon region in France and in the Empordà area in Spain. In terms of ampelographic characteristics, it is almost identical to black Cariñena, with the exception of the berry skin color.
The variety belongs to the late-ripening category with slow vegetation. It is characterized by high sensitivity to fungal diseases, especially powdery mildew, and prefers poor soils.
In winemaking, it is used both for blending with other white varieties and for the production of single-varietal wines. The resulting wines have good balance, pronounced acidity, high alcohol content, and moderate aromatics with possible citrus notes.
