The variety Carmina, also known as Geilweilerhof 4-26-4, was bred at the Institute for Grapevine Breeding at Geilweilerhof. The origin of the variety through the crossing of the varieties Blauer Portugieser and Spätburgunder was confirmed by genetic analysis in 2012.
The berries of the variety have a red color. Due to its ability to impart a deep color to wine, the variety is classified as a teinturier grape and is intended for technical use in winemaking.
