The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera L. and is a white mutation of the dark-skinned Carignan variety. The plant is characterized by late maturity and high yields, which is why winegrowers often restrict crop volume to maintain quality. The berries are large, and the vines are often grown using the bush training method.

Carignan blanc is drought-tolerant but sensitive to powdery mildew (Oidium). It is a wine grape variety used for the production of wines with moderate alcohol content, possessing freshness, good acidity, and floral-citrus notes. The wines can be varietal or used in blends with other varieties.

The variety is considered rare. Its main plantings are concentrated in the south of France and in northwestern Spain, where it is also known by the synonyms Carinyena Blanca and Samso Blanco.
