The variety is a "full sibling" of such well-known varieties as Chardonnay, Aligoté, and Gamay. It is intended for the production of red wines, which are described as rather delicate and tart. It has many synonyms, including Gougenot, Plant Jacquot, Franc Noir de Cendrecourt, and Franc Noir de Gy.

The plant is characterized as vigorous with small, compact bunches. The variety is susceptible to major fungal diseases, such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray mold, which was one of the reasons for its disappearance from widespread viticultural practice. The yield of the variety is described as unstable.
