The variety is characterized by small, dense clusters and medium-sized, blue-black oval berries with colorless pulp. Gamay is distinguished by high yield and susceptibility to diseases. The best quality indicators are achieved when grown on acidic, granite, and slate soils; however, yield control is required on rich soils.

Wine from this variety has a pronounced fruity aroma, high acidity, and low tannin content. It is used for the production of young wines, including by the carbonic maceration method, and with traditional vinification, it is capable of producing more complex wines with aging potential.
