The variety has ancient origins, presumably from Greece, and is the result of a natural mutation rather than hybridization. It is used primarily as a wine grape variety.

The plant's leaf is pentagonal in shape with five lobes. The cluster is compact and conical in shape. The berries are spherical, red-gray in color, with thin skin and colorless pulp, possessing a characteristic muscat aroma.
