The variety is autochthonous to the Somontano region in Aragon, Spain. It is known by the synonyms Concejon and Juan Ibanez. It is a wine grape variety used primarily in blends with the Parraleta, Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Syrah varieties.

Wines made from this grape are characterized by lightness, moderate acidity and tannin levels, as well as a distinct fruity and spicy profile. The variety is considered temperamental in cultivation, requiring careful maintenance and special attention during vinification due to a tendency toward rapid oxidation.
